Children of BBlood, The First Tome Empty
PostSubject: Children of BBlood, The First Tome   Children of BBlood, The First Tome EmptySun Oct 31, 2010 7:13 pm

Yes, BBlood is not a typo. And, YIPPEE, YAY, it's here!!

Children of BBlood, The First Tome
Chapter One- The Marks of Death

A butterfly lands on Max's nose.

Of course, being the innocent, naïve, and annoyingly cheerful soul she is, Maxine simply giggles, and stares cross-eyed at the stinking corpse of a butterfly. The butterfly's empty eyes looks back. "Fly, fly!" She urges the butterfly. "Fly!"

The butterfly tries to flap its torn-up, chalky blue wings, but to no avail. Max lifts her hand to poke it, but I quickly stop her. I frown disapprovingly. A gust of wind from the surface blows into the barren volcanic region where we live. The melancholic butterfly uses this to glide into the air, going only-goodness-knows-where.

"Max," I scold, "don't disturb the newly dead." That's it. I'm not the type to hold something. Especially towards my surface-born little sister. Max tilts her sandy-brown haired head sideways, and laughs. There's an amused twinkle in her misty eyes. She runs towards the house, probably to bother Andrew or something. I follow her.

I'm Terrie Bonebull, AKA The Sixteen-Year-Old Witch Who Can't Do Magic, or so I'm told. I'm supposedly- half faerie, at least, according to my family tree. But I don't feel or look like a faerie. I don't even have pointed ears. I actually look more like a vampire, since I'm the palest of my siblings. I have milky white skin, silver hair, and light purple eyes. I guess you'd call me an albino on the surface.

The Bonebulls have lived in the Underworld for almost a thousand years, and that's even before the mortals started realizing demons and monsters were among them, and drove them into the Underworld. In my opinion, they should have noticed sooner. The supernatural isn't that hard to miss. My family- Mother, Papa, Max, and Andrew- lives here, on the Marks of Death, where the newly dead pass through.

"Terr-Terr," Max hollers, "look what I made!" I groan. She has made a huge mess out of that deadberry pie I had baked earlier, in an attempt to make "pudding."

"Max!" I yell, and run to the closet to get a mop. Andrew stands in the doorway, mop out in his hand. "Thanks," I say, and clean up the black goop all over the kitchen. The goop's as midnight black as Andrew's hair. Why I have to deal with this, I said to myself, I don't know why. I look at the clock as I wipe furiously. Three weeks, two days, fourty-five minutes, and seven seconds until Papa and Mother get home.

Mother and Papa are on one of those magical expeditions to some faraway place on the surface. I think it's Shangri-La, or something like that. "Phew," I breathe, and wipe my forehead dripping with sweat. It's summer on the surface, and imagine here, near volcanic activity. "Max, Andrew. Go upstairs," I order. Max hurries up the stairs, her black skirts flying.

Andrew quietly heads for the stairway. He pauses there, and looks up at me, emotionless as usual. I smile. It's supposed to be a comforting smile, which never does much good anyway. He slowly walks up the stairs. "Don't you talk?" I ask after him. As always, no response.

Andrew's 8 and kind of a mute. Four years ago on an ordinary day, when Mother was busy with baby Max, Papa, me, and little Andrew went on an epic boat ride on the Cannibal Run. It was fun, until we reached this certain part of the rapids. After we passed through, Andrew never was the same again.

"My little Andrew," I hear Mother mourn that night. "My Andrew." She clutches my brother close to her heart, silently weeping over him. Mother cast every healing spell for him, but nothing worked. Nothing can restore Andrew's speech, and anything else that has disappeared. I don't think Mother will ever truly forgive Papa.

"I wish you do talk," I mutter as I climb up the stairs to the cool second floor. The kitchen's the hottest room in the house; Mother had got it into her head to make the kitchen as hot as possible so cooking foods would take the least amount of effort possible. I don't know how she came to that conclusion, though.

I walk into the nursery, being careful to close the door behind me. "Terr-Terr, look!" Max happily exclaims. I see a model of the Eiffel Tower on the carpet completely made out of bleached bones. It is the size of Andrew, which is clearly seen as he's standing right next to it. "You made this?" I ask skeptically. Andrew nods. "OK," I say excitedly, "lemme try!"

------------------------------------------------

A purple portal opens in a roomy cellar, surprisingly the place of many wretched events. A person cloaked in red falls out of the portal onto the packed dirt floor, and stumbles into a dark corner. The person rests head in knees, sobbing violently. Blood darker than the cloak runs down from the person's head towards the floor, making a small puddle of blood.

The portal is still open, and the sight of it tortures the person. The person cannot close it. Suddenly the portal closes, and the person looks up. Olive green eyes fixed onto where it used to be, the person stands up. She tries to speak, but she is too weak. A door suddenly creaks open from above.

The person stares up the stairs. There's an old wooden door open, and a little figure looks down, uncertain whether go down or not.

Happy Halloween! Very Happy

Children of BBlood, The First Tome
Chapter Two- Heat, Smoke, and Magma

Bony white fingers play with the blood fallen victim to him, tame It, devour It.

If he doesn't, It will devour him as well.

"It needs to spread...it cannot survive on me only any longer..."

---------------------------------------------

The intense heat of the volcano tries to lull us to sleep. I pour a steady stream of bone-chillingly cold water from a bucket onto Max, who's in her bathing suit. I dunk my head into a new bucket for a second or two, trying to stay awake. Andrew's standing outside the bathroom, a bit drowsy. Like me, he knows well enough not to listen to the volcano's warm, silent lullabies. He won't obey his body's urging to sleep, either.

Except for Max, everybody (which is only a handful) on the Marks of Death knows that if the vacant volcano right under our feet should ever heat up, you shouldn't faint. It's rumored that if you do, the volcanic soil will drag you down to the deepest level of the Underworld, right where all the magma is formed. That or you'll never wake up again.

After Max's bath, I put her into a thin white nightie and thick leather booties. I don't think it'll stay white for long. Then I give her a shot of reviverry juice. That wakes her up, unfortunately. "YAAY!" She screams randomly, and runs outside. Little sparks of fire explode under her feet, making the land even more sootier.

I shake my head. If only that soot could be used for farming here... I race her, never looking back to see Andrew finding bones. Most were scorched black, while others were an earthy tan. But somehow, he always finds a way to bleach bones, no matter how dirty they may be. He's got some kind of magic, I guess.

When we get back, I pant relentlessly, and splash water onto my face from a bowl of ice water Andrew had put out. "Thanks," I breathe. Andrew just nods, still wearing that blank expression. I watch Max chase after newly dead insects, and sometimes the occasional mouse. I see dead people on the horizon, but they're too far away to tell for sure. For a second they glance at us, then move on. That's unusual, 'cause Grim hasn't reaped that many human souls ever since he lost a bet to some surface kids.

Max comes back, and dunks her whole head into the bowl for at least five minutes. I deeply sigh as I try to enjoy the fresh summer breeze from above. "Let's go to town," I say, talking to no one in particular. Of course, no one takes me seriously.

----------------------------------------------

Dark eyes widened, Andrew struggles to escape my grasp, while Max skips happily beside me. We're a real family, all right. We're careful not to step into the small streams of magma. Max is more likely to burn herself, but her booties had been charmed to become magma-resistant. I, for one, don't need charmed footwear of any kind.

I am nimble, swift, and cautious, I repeat to myself as I warily cross a stream lazily bubbling magma. Nimble, swift, cautious. Two more streams. Nimble, swift, cautious. One big one. Nimble, swift, cautious.

Nimble, swift, cautious, nimble, swift, caut-

"Terrrrrie!" A voice echoes out, and I spin around. "Did you hear that?" I ask Max and Andrew. They shake their heads. "Huh," I remark. "I though I heard someone." We keep on walking.

"Must be a mirage."

----------------------------------------------

Town is dead-silent as we walk in. Well, not exactly a town. It's more like a village, consisting only of a general store, several houses and apartments, a supermarket, some clothing stores, a "Parts for the Undead" shop, an electronics shop, and an abandoned mental hospital.

Yeah, you heard me. There's an abandoned mental hospital on the outskirts of the village. It isn't haunted though, which leads me to wonder. Every single building in the Underworld is haunted in some way, even ours. "I hate this village," I retort.

"It's so....meh."

"But, whatever, I'm bored," I say as I lean against a street lamp. I'm careful not to touch the little reservoir full of hot coals inside the lamp. Max runs up to me, pleading, "I wanna ride the bike! The fancy one!"

I look over to the electronics shop, and sure enough, there's a steam powered electric bicycle in the window. By the expression in Max's eyes, it seems that the bicycle is just mocking her with its vivid yellow and blinding luster.

Before I know it, I'm marching into the store with Max by my side, wearing a hopeful grin. I'm determined not to let anyone get mocked, even by some ridiculous bicycle incapable of any emotion. "How much is the yellow bike?" I demand the undead shopkeeper. "$95," he answers. "Decorations and coal extra for $10."

I'm surprised. Bicycles shouldn't cost that much, even electric ones. I know I'm going to regret this, I lament as I fish in my pockets for money. I come across a couple of dollars in my pocket, and some bones in the other. I meekly show the shopkeeper the bones.

They're finger bones that anyone dead could really use. They're real nice specimens. The shopkeeper looks tempted, but instead says with an edge of irritation, "This isn't a pawn shop. There's one next door if you need money." I resist growling and stomp to "Parts for the Undead."

"Here," I grumble as I slam the delicate needle-like bones onto the glass counter. I didn't bother to say hello to the nice doctor. "How much for 'em?"

Dr. Ellshere, an Underworld-renowned bone and jewel specialist, lets a small smile slip, then inspects the finger bones with his glass. I look down to the pretty jewelry made of old heirloom jewels. I consider buying a piece of costume jewelry.

"Well, Miss Terrie," Dr. Ellshere says, flashing his world-known grin of four fangs, "you've got a live one. I'll give you $200 for them."

$200!

But I nod in my trance the vampire's generosity has caused. Without thinking I leave the shop, never noticing the two hundred bills he slips into my hands, never noticing the small tender peck he gives on my cheek.

Once I'm in the electronics shop, I remember, and my whole face goes red. I give the shopkeeper $105, plus tax. Max, Andrew, and I wait as the shopkeeper gets the electric bicycle, paints it, fill it with coal, and attaches a bell.

Suddenly I spot hazy smoke drifting out of the mental hospital, and I think I see bright eyes peering out of the broken windows. I tell the other two to stay put, and so, I run towards the hospital.

And, God, I can only imagine what won't happen next.

Children of BBlood, The First Tome Empty
PostSubject: Re: Children of BBlood, The First Tome   Children of BBlood, The First Tome EmptyThu Nov 25, 2010 11:23 pm

The poems recited are not mine. They are written by Lewis Carroll himself. The first is called "Dreamland, the second "Brother and Sister," and the last "My Fairy." Oh and words in parentheses are words Max got wrong. ^_^ I'm such a Carroll fangirl.

Children of BBlood, The First Tome
Chapter Three- Two Carroll Admirers in Particular

Running. Running. Can't think. Must survive. Will survive. Red portal. See nothing at all.... Blood. Blood. Something warm dripping down face. What is it? What is it?

Dog! At least she thinks it is. Must survive. Must survive. Strange pinkish color...Feeling quite faint...

-----------------------------------------------

Boards creak and bats screech their horrid nighttime songs as I step into the abandoned hospital. Cockroaches scatter all around, leaving me a bit paralyzed in disgust. To soothe my frayed nerves, I repeat a little poem I have read as a child to myself:

When midnight mists are creeping,
And all the land is sleeping,
Around me tread the mighty dead,
And slowly pass away.

Lo, warriors, saints, and sages
From out the vanished ages,
With solemn pace and reverend face
Appear and pass away.

The blaze of noonday splendor,
The twilight soft and tender,
May charm the eye; yet they shall die,
Shall die and pass away.

But here, in Dreamland's center,
No spoiler's hand may enter,
These visions fair, this radiance rare,
Shall never pass away.

I see the shadows falling,
The forms of old recalling;
Around me tread the mighty dead,
And slowly pass away.

"Oh, Terr-Terr, tell me Brother and Sister next!" Max's voice chimes next to me. "Huh?" I turn to my side, and there's Max walking her new bicycle around. "Oh. Wait- Why didn't you stay there?!" She looks up at me with innocent puppy eyes. "B-but Terr-Terr, I didn't listen! Andrew's back there, though."

"Oh," I say with a slow relieved sigh. "Fine, I'll recite the poem:

'Sister, sister, go to bed!
Go and rest your weary head.'
Thus the prudent brother said.

'Do you want a battered hide,
Or scratches to your face applied?'
Thus his sister calm replied.

'Sister, do not raise my wrath.
I'd make you into mutton broth
As easily as kill a moth!'

The sister raised her beaming eye
And looked on him indignantly
And sternly answered, 'Only try!'

Off to the cook he quickly ran.
'Dear Cook, please lend a frying-pan
To me as quickly as you can.'

'And wherefore should I lend it you?'
'The reason, Cook, is plain to view.
I wish to make an Irish stew.'

'What meat is in that stew to go?'
'My sister'll be the contents!'
'Oh!'
'You'll lend the pan to me, Cook?'
'No!'"

Max joyously laughs and her misty eyes twinkles. I try to shush her. The creepy shadows are starting to frighten me. "My turn!" I roll my eyes. I just know what's it going to be. After taking a huge breath, she recites:

"I have a fairy by my side
Which says I must not sleep,
When once in pain I loudly cried
It said 'You must not weep.'

If, full of (mirth), I smile and grin,
It says 'You must not laugh';
When once I wished to drink some gin
It said 'You must not (quaff).'

When once a meal I wished to taste
It said 'You must not bite';
When to the wars I went in (haste)
It said 'You must not fight.'

'What may I do?' At length I cried,
Tired of the painful task,
The fairy quietly replied,
And said 'You must not ask.'"

I sweatdrop. Boy, does Max love that poem. She got three words wrong...

In a flash there are several sudden movements out of the corner of my eye. "Terr-Terr...what's that?" Max asks, and points to something behind me. For the first time I notice slight breathing behind me. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and my lavender eyes widen.

Right now is when I dare to look into my killer's face. The first thing I see is a pair of eyes the color of blood. There's a fanged set of knives in the creature's mouth, and the axes are stained with red. Blood. Its eyes mesmerize me, as I've never seen a pair like them ever before in my life. And now, as I approach closer and closer to Death, such terribly beautiful irises are my consolation gift. One last gift.

I know I am very near Death, and I could already hear the sounds of the Grim Reaper approaching in my mind. One bite, one incredibly small but overwhelmingly painful bite, and it'd all over. I could sense the monster's eyes inspecting my neck, determining the choicest target. I think I feel his sharp needles begin to pierce my skin.

Now does Max kick the vampire in his tenders. "LET'S GO," I boom, and we speed off deeper into the building. I look behind, but the vampire is gone.

My heart resumes its beating as usual, and I can only hope we wouldn't encounter any more of his kind.

Lewis Caroll is a good one to be a fan of. I need to read this entirely without skimming when I get the time. From what I looked at it seemed very good.

MWHAHA Cliffhanger! >Very Happy

Children of BBlood- The First Tome
Chapter 4- Free Falls

"Terr-Terr! Look!"

There is a square of light in the distance. Max and I have been on the bike for about a half-hour now, and we're beginning to run out of steam. Of course, I've pedaled most of the time. "Pedal more, Terr-Terr!"

Before I can protest from exhaustion, Max pulls out a blackened bone. "What's that-"

"Andrew gave me. Itsa bone candle."

I'm suspicious, but I decide not to ask. "OK," I say sarcastically, "I bet you know where to find the FIRE!" Max shakes her head, but points to the square of light. "Maybe there?"

I huff, then pedal. As we go nearer, what do we find but a giant steam generator. The square of light's actually a window in the furnace, where coal is actively burning. "Gosh, its hot here," I remark. I look over to Max. How did she manage to stay comfortable in those black puffy skirts she wore earlier? She walks over to the window.

"Max...what are you doing?" My eyebrows raise. "Max...?" She stares inside, as if mesmerized by the forever changing image of burning red coals. Her eyes are big and wide. I don't like it one bit. Then she touches the copper surface! "MAX!"

She yelps as I pull her away. "What were you doing?!" I asked, and she cries terribly as I inspect her arms thoroughly. Her hands are burned slightly to a pinkish red, no blisters and most likely a first-degree burn. Max is wailing hysterically. I snap, "Be quiet, Maxine! It's a first-degree burn, nothing to worry about! Now, you need honey for this, right? You're the one who doesn't fail at magic!" I swear I'm becoming more like Mother these days.

Max sniffles, then nods. "Yes," she whispers. "OK," I answer back. "Yeesh." I look over to the steam generator. "What were you doing?" I ask, but Max simply shrugs. "Terr-Terr," she whimpers, "why can't I cry?"

"'Cause those vampires will hear us if you do," I answer. "Oh," Max says. She sits down on something. "This- AAAAHHHHH!!" Whatever she's sitting on falls down into a hole, along with her too. "Oh, come on!" I yell as I look into the seemingly bottomless pit of darkness. "Maaaaxx!"

"TEEEERIIIIIIIE!"

I almost jump into the tunnel on impulse, when I see a broken-down old kind of elevator. "Oh God," I mutter to myself in disbelief as I go inside and kick the controls. Isn't there this saying that says that anything works if you kick it? Apparently it's true, as the lights begin to flicker on and off.

"Yes!" I whisper under my breath, then pull the lever with all my might. "Stupid...lever..."I mutter. "Stupid...vampires..."

-creeeeeaaaak- The elevator creaks and groans as it goes down. My ears almost hurt. I stop as I spot a sliver of light slipping through the crack in the elevator doors. -pant pant- The rusty doors creak some more as they open only halfway. The floor's only darkness, with an exception of a steady light bulb installed on the ceiling in front of the elevator. The list of floors in the elevator states that it's floor -1.

"Max," I yell into the darkness, "you there?" No answer, so I groan. "Great, just 8 more floors to go." I start to pull the lever again.

Floor -2. "Max?" No response.

Floor -3. "Max?"

Floor -4. "MAX!"

"Max!"

"Max!

"MAX?!"

"MAAAAAX!"

My arms are limp and sore; I don't think I can go on any longer. I'm on floor -8, and every basement floor so far has been pretty much the same. But for some reason -8 has a couple torches on the walls, providing some visibility. I exit the floor, only to bump into a crate. -oof!-

The letters on the crate reads: Property of Psycho-Emotional Hospital. So that's the name of the hospital. I stand up, dust myself off, and grab a torch. The floor's actually linoleum instead of the dirt-packed floor I have been expecting, so my fall was much harder than it ought to be. I try to pry open the crate, but the top opens easily. Someone's here, I thought, or something. I look into the crate and take out a few bottles.

"Reviverry juice! Great!" I drink one of the bottles, only to cough violently. It's reviverry, all right, but it's so not juice. IT BURNS! It's so strong that I collapse yet again, almost fainting. The torch falls out of my hand, but where? Before I know it, someone's gagging me, and all goes black.

------------------------------------------------

"Has he any blood to spare?"

"Oh yes, oh yes, he does! He mayn't be awake, but I know His Excellency would certainly approve of this."

"Are you certain?"

"If we suck his blood now, all our plans will succeed. Think of it as the domino effect..."

"And the two maidens?"

"The little one will be important in His Excellency's Grand Act. The other one we may dispose of. She is but a weak link."

"I agree! Let us kill him now..."

-----------------------------------------------

"Ohhh..." I moan as I open my eyes. I look around. "Oh. Crap."

I'm actually upside down, strapped to the ceiling by ropes. I feel nauseous by the forces of gravity trying to pull me down. Below me there's a bunch of vampires scurrying around the place. I notice the ones building a fire right below me the most. I gasp, then look to my sides. Attached to the ropes around my limbs are even more ropes, and the ends of those ropes are wrapped around a wooden peg each. Right next to each of these pegs is a saw. I know immediately what they're gonna do.

After they finish building the fire, they'll saw the ropes off, so I can fall into the fire and- I scream, "LEMME OUTTA HERE!!"

The vampires pay no attention to me, and continue building the fire. I sigh and scream a little more. Some look up, but only for a mere second. "Drat," I say, "they have no humanity at all." I don't struggle, since struggling only makes it worse, but instead look around the basement to see if there's anything that can help me.

The floor's made out of dirt, not linoleum, so I guess this is -9. Despite the dirt floor, the basement floor looks most like a hospital floor. There are actually a few cots scattered around, and several pieces of medical equipment. All of those, however, have blood in those little pouches that keep you alive or something. I shudder. Then suddenly I have an idea.

"Hey, you!" I shout to a vampire below. "Me?" That vampire asks back.

"Yes, you. Don't you think I'm a vampire? I look like one, for starters!!"

"...Yes. But are you really a vampire?"

I look the other way, take out a red lipstick, and smother my lips with it. I show my face to the vampire. "See!" The vampire looks confused for a bit, then turns around and tells the others something. The other vampires nod, then several of them go over to the pegs, and lean over them. The rest stop building and instead get something glowing into the firewood.

They'll still burn me! I thought. "W-wait, you would not burn a vampire, would you?! R-really, would not that be blasphemy to our Vampire Law?!"

"No," A vampire bluntly answered.

"Oh." I'm doomed. The heat of a hundred flames suddenly flare towards my face. It almost burns. I scream hysterically and struggle like a maniac. The rope bites into my skin. Goodbye Max, goodbye Andrew, goodbye Mother, goodbye Papa...I'm sorry I couldn't see you one last time.

I feel the drop.
