PROLOGUE

I decided to do it. I walked up to the shabby door of Pokey Oaks Junior High, and wrote my name down on the short piece of paper on the gym door. I slowly walked away.

PART 1-The Beginning

CHAPTER 1

I stepped outside the door, and, with my eyes closed, opened the mailbox. It was there. The nice, cool breeze made my nose twitch with the smell of freshly-cut grass. I smiled, took in the beauty of Pokey Oaks North, and knew I wouldn't be here, at least not in this time period, ever again.
I ran to my friend's house. Passing the PowerPuff Girls' House, I never realized it was so colorful. I looked away, and kept dashing. I passed his mailbox, the word Vancannon's clearly popping out at me. Once I reached his house, I hastily rang the doorbell, waiting for his reply. I stood there, quietly jumping around, thinking in my mind, Come on!
I jumped when he opened the door, surely interrupting my train of thought.
Looking at the excited expression on his face, I said, "Hey Dex! So..."
I waited for his reply, even though I already knew.

"Yes! I got it, Shadow! I was just watching when you came to my door."

Okay, so, this is my friend, Dexter. I call him Dex for short. He has ruffled brown hair, and shiny blue eyes. He is medium height, though. His parents are great friends with Dexter's parents, so they named him Dexter as well. Dex has never met Dexter though, so he's looking forward to what is about to happen to us.

My name is Travis. Dex calls me Shadow, well, because I prefer it, and my eyes are charcoal colored, and my hair goes over one eye. My hair is a deep, deep brown color, and I am kind of short.

"Oh man! You already watched it? Come with me to my house, we'll watch mine." I said, quickly.

Dex nodded, grabbed two skateboards, and we boarded to my house. Once we got to my house, I fumbled for the key. Checking all my pockets, it was in the last one. I stuck it into the lock, twisted the key, and stepped inside. We ran into my dark room, turned of the lights, and sat on the floor. I pulled out what came in the mail-a sleek, light blue square with a button and the Dexlabs logo on it. I bit my lip, closed my eyes, and pushed the button.

Yeah it's pretty good. Probably the first to incorporate vehicles from the very begining (if you don't count my bike scene) so it's pretty original for that too I suppose.

CHAPTER 2

The prompting was like nothing I had ever seen before.
After pushing the button, a faint blue light appeared. Dex and I watched as the light grew into a shape, and soon I recognized it was Dexter.

"Greetings, TRAVIS FLAME," My name sounded like it was a robot speaking. "You have signed up to save the world. Come to Sector V for your briefing. Meet with Computress in Hero Square. She will tell you what to do. I will see you soon. Thank you, and good luck."
The blue light widened then thinned, and disappeared back into the blue square. I looked at Dex, nodded, and he understood. We got up, grabbed the skateboards, and headed off for Sector V.

The trip wasn't that far, because I lived in the house on the street leading up to Sector V. On the road, a car drove by, nearly killing us. We decided to stay on the sidewalk. Passing a sign that said, Welcome to Sector V, we kept boarding until the pavement turned from dark gray to a lighter gray. I looked around, I had never been to Sector V despite the fact I lived so close. It was breathtaking-there were benches with the letters K-N-D on them, knowing this meant the Kids Next Door. There were trees planted in a pattern, looking beautiful. Looking directly at the center of Hero Square, there were four famous people I had seen before. Standing small and proud was Buttercup, a superhero kindergartener at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten. Next was Bloo-the stubborn, strong headed imaginary friend I had constantly seen at Foster's. I knew Bloo because I had an imaginary friend-sadly, as i grew up, I had to stop visiting and put up Jellypop for adoption. On the third podium was Ben-a ten year old kid who I had seen before, playing around in Pokey Oaks South. Sometimes he would run off somewhere and an alien would appear. Not a scary alien, no, but a hero. He would save people in need. One I saw constantly was a big, red alien with four arms. I believe I've seen ten aliens, but I'm not sure. On the last podium rose Edd-The smartest of the three Ed's, he would always make inventions and calculate. I always saw him around the Cul-de-Sac.

But the most stunning thing that caught my eye was the treehouse. The KND Treehouse was amazing, considering that kids created it. It was just so well made. I looked at it, stunned, while Dex pulled me along. I didn't realize I was in the middle of Hero Square when Dex shook me back to reality. I realize I was standing in front of Computress, when she asked our names.

"Hello, what are your names?"

Dex decided to speak for us, and replied, "I am Dexter Vancannon, and this is Travis Flame."

I didn't know how to respond to a robot, so I sheepishly waved to her.

Computress looked down at a clipboard she was holding, which I didn't understand because Dexter could have easily programmed the signup names into her head.

"Ah, Travis Flame and Dexter Vancannon. Please follow the arrows on the ground. Good luck, I will be there to assist you soon."

I looked around, not remembering seeing arrows before. I turned about 340 degrees, and saw them. I grabbed a board, jumped onto it, and dashed off following the arrows.

Following the arrows, we didn't go far, just over a bridge and up onto the treehouse platform. The arrows continued past the house, and through the window I could faintly see a bald head pointing and directing four other children. We stopped when the arrows ended on the grass, confused.

Looking around, Dex said, "Where are we supposed to go?"

I was about to respond when the ground caved under our wheels, and we fell.

CHAPTER 3

It was dark, pitch black. I couldn't see a thing. I reached out to feel Dex, just to make sure I wasn't alone, but a faint blue light like the one in the square lit up. A bright light filled the whole room, and I had to close my eyes to get accustomed to the light.

A purple colored hand reached out to shake my hand, and I looked up, squinting, at boy genius Dexter. I shook his gloved hand and said hi. Dex, on the other hand, praised him.

Kneeling, although all Dexter wanted was to shake his hand, Dex said, "Hello, O genius Dexter! You are my idol, I am not worthy..."
Dex was holding Dexter's leg, and Dex, with a this-guy-is-a-weirdo face, shook it off.

"So, ah, what are you two's names?" asked Dexter, calmly.

I decided to take the names this time, so I stepped forward a bit and said, "I am Travis Flame, and this," I pointed to Dex, "is Dex. His parents know your parents."

Dexter nodded, and looked toward Dex. "So, Dex, what is your last name?"

"Uh, um..."
"So your name is Dexter Uh-um?"

I looked at Dex, then at Dexter. "His last name is Vancannon," I said, matter-of-factly.

Dexter sighed, and said, "Well, those will not be your names anymore. Your names will be changed...either using our name generating machine, or manually," He paused, as if trying to remember something. He made an expression that looked like he remembered, and continued, "If you enter a manual name though, we will have to enter it through Computress for any profanity or inappropriateness. Understand?"

Because Dex was still in shock, I spoke for us once again. "Yes, Dexter, we understand."

"Great. Follow me."

The indentity changer room was amazing.

In the center, there was a gigantic machine where people were typing. I took it that the machine was the Name Generating Machine. Dexter told us to approach it and enter a name generating station. I took the one at the very end, and followed the on-screen directions.

I didn't know whether to make up a name, or generate a name. I randomly picked, and chose manual. I wanted a name that sounded like my name, but cooler. I thought about something that was like Travis, but couldn't think of anything. I went down a list, Train, Traffic, Trap, Transit, Tracks, Tranquil, Travel.

I stopped. Tranquil. Hm...my nickname is Shadow, my last name is Flame. Tranquil. Shadow. Flame.

Tranquil Shadow Flame.

I like it.

After choosing a name, I had to go to the appearance changer. It was a big, sleek tube, rising 8 feet into the air. There was a single door, and I was directed to go inside.

Inside, there was only a large screen. I pressed a button, and it sprang to life. I could change anything-height, hair, clothes. I started with height. I chose tall, because I was used to being short. For my hair, I looked. I decided to go with white hair, draping over one eye. I chose wide eye, even though you could only see one eye. I did black eye color, and chose my clothes. I did the classic Gothic ensemble, clicked finish, and flew straight into the air.

It was only a nanosecond, but when I came back down I looked exactly like I did on the screen. I stepped out, and then had to wait in line to see Dexter. All the kids got into a big group, but I didn't see Dex anywhere. But, how was I supposed to know, he changed his appearance.

We stepped inside the warping room, and I realized I would never be in this time period ever again.

PART 2-The Future

CHAPTER 4

"You have all signed up to be the heroes of tomorrow and save our world. Correct?"

Everyone in the room nodded to Dexter's statement, and he continued.

"You will each be issued a special watch. This is called a NanoCom. You will be taught the features later. Now, are you ready?"

We all nodded once again.

"Good. Now, I will just have to program this in . . . ,"

In the back, I heard a high pitched girl voice, which said, "What does this button do?"

After I heard a beep, Dexter ran to the back and said, "Dee Dee! No!"

The whole room shook, rumbling and rocking, until another blue light appeared, blinded me, and I was lying on the ground.

"Hello? Do you hear me? It is Dexter. I have e-mailed Ben Tennyson and Numbuh Five to show you how to work. Good luck. Computress will be aiding you the whole way."

Ben and Numbuh Five ran up to me.

"B-Ben? You-you are so much older." I said.

"You know me?"
"I remember you. You went to Pokey Oaks a lot. You turned into that four-armed monster."
"Oh yeah, that was Fourarms. I'm glad you remembered him. I can't go alien any more-if I do, that just gives Fusion Ben more alien DNA for Fuse to work with."

At this point, Numbuh Five cut in. "Okay, okay, we have something important to do! Kid, Computress will show you how the NanoCom has enhanced you."

I looked on my watch, and Computress's face grew out of my watch as a hologram.

"Please run forward to touch the shining light."

I looked forward, and saw a light-I ran toward it, grabbed it, and it disappeared. Computress reappeared, and said, "Please turn around and run to that light."

I did as she said, and ran toward the heaps of junk where the light was. I grabbed the light once again, watching it disappear. Computress popped up again, saying, "With the NanoCom, your jump has greatly increased. Move along to the ledge and jump onto it."

I turned around and looked at the ledge that I would have to normally climb up onto. I ran, braced myself and jumped. I realized I was much higher in the air than I realized. I flipped in the air, feeling good, and grabbed the light onn the way back down. Computress showed up again, and said, "Very good. Now go all the way up and speak with Ben and Numbuh Five."

I did as she said, and jumped up the ledge. Going up the ledge, I looked up and saw Blossom and Bubbles, they cute little kindergarteners were now my age. I also saw Numbuh One, the short bald headed kid from the treehouse was no tall and older. I hadn't realised how far into the future I had went. I went up to Ben and Numbuh Five, and saw some big, green balls of goo. Numbuh Five told me to take the weapon in her hand, a red gun which I read from my NanoCom was a lightning gun. I took it, and Ben and Numbuh Five told me to start shooting at the green balls. I started shooting at them, and as I did the sky grew dark and green. Ben yelled, "No! A Fusion storm!" I looked into the air, seeing dark, green clouds covering up the sky. Numbuh Five yelled, "Kid, it might hurt at first, but you'll get used to it!"

I asked her, "What do you-" and I realized what she meant. A drop of green fell on my arm, and I instantly cried in pain. "OW!!!" I knelt to the ground, holding back tears. On the ground, in the rain, green, dark, rain, the goo surrounded me. They started spitting more green goo at me, and I screamed even louder. "GRRAH!!" The only things I had left were bravery-and hope. Ben and Numbuh Five were busy with the giant green glob. I used my last bit of strength to stick my gun into the glob, and pull the trigger and hold it there. The glob melted, melted into two wondrous lights, and orange and green, which flew to me and helped me. I realized the green stuff was fusion matter. The orange light had flown into my NanoCom, and converted into golden coins. Taros, I gained MONEY from these globs. I was till on the ground, and my newfound strength helped me up. My hair fell down even lower on my head, and my clothes were green and stuck to my skin. I leaped up, and shot at the globs from in the air. The shots seemed to shock the globs, and they melted as well. Four bright lights flew to me, and I felt even more powerful. Ben and Numbuh Five had finished the big glob, and they called to me.

"Hey kid! If you still got some strength, come help us defeat this Cyberus!"

I looked up at the three headed wolf-robot, and cried, "No problem!"

Ben gave me a thumbs-up, and started punching the wolf while Numbuh Five shot him with some kind of popsicle. The green rain spewed on, and the three fighters finished off each of those cyborg heads.

Wow, that was epic.

CHAPTER 5

"This is your first mission."

I looked at my NanoCom, brought up the hologram and punched "Journal". From there, I saw all the details for my first mission. Numbuh Two had told me to go kill an "Oil Ogre". I was standing under a rooftop, shielding myself from the Fusion Matter rain. On the little map that I guessed was programmed into my eyes, mainly because I could see it anywhere I went, there was a red arrow pointing northeastern. I decided to start right now, and ran over, following the red arrow. I ran out from under the rooftop, and the Fusion Matter rain didn't sting as bad. I snuck slowly behind a box as I looked at the Oil Ogre. It was gross.

For one, it was big, green, and had a crocodile type mouth. It had oil barrels sticking out everywhere, and was spitting out more Fusion Matter than the green globs. I jumped over the boxes, and started shooting at it. It clawed at me, leaving faint scratches on my arm, but it didn't hurt that much. After about half a minute, the Ogre melted into the ground. The wonderful lights flew back to me, and I knew I was getting stronger-and richer. The details programed into my eyes told me to go back to Numbuh Two. I ran, quickly, as the clouds parted and the rain stopped. I was relieved, but I didn't have time to look up at the sky. I stopped and told Numbuh Two I had finished. He took the mission, and I gained a lot of Fusion Matter-it seemed to just grow after I finished the mission. Soon enough, a message popped out of my watch, telling me to go to Buttercup.

"Buttercup! You have a mission for me?" I asked, impatiently.
"Yeah-just go into this warp pad, and meet Dexter inside the Fusion Lair. Be careful, though, that green water is highly acidic. Be careful not to step into it," she paused, regretting what she was going to say. "or you might die."

I nodded, and said, "Thanks, Buttercup."

I ran onto the warp pad.

The robot that was standing on the warp pad said, "What a wonderful day today."

I hastily asked, "Um, not really. Could you just warp me now?"

"Most certainly."

I was surrounded by light, and I suddenly appeared into the Infected Zone. There were many stone platforms, and I jumped onto the first one.
I cried, "Whoa," The platform was really slippery. "Now I understand why Buttercup gave me the warning."

I cutiously jumped to the next platform, and almost fell off. I grabbed the edge, but my hands started slipping. I fell into the water.

It hurt like crazy. It was like the Fusion Matter Rain-but ten times as worse and it afflicted all of your body. "Gr-" I held back a scream, and swam back to the start. It was a little far-I started getting tunnel vision, but I was able to make it back to the start in time. I sat down, tired, and realized I was feeling better.

"Wow, auto heal," I thought to myself. "That was handy."

After I felt better, I tried the platforms again. Jumping from stone to stone, I finally made it to the large circle with large green tendrils coming out of it.

I stood inside of it, and disappeared into the Fusion Lair.
