Always end a chapter with a cliffhanger to make them keep reading

Fan-Fic Tips Empty
PostSubject: Re: Fan-Fic Tips   Fan-Fic Tips EmptySat Jul 11, 2009 11:42 am

Well, since this thread's already here, I guess I'll just post some advice for anyone interested in writing their own fanfic or wish to improve on their own here instead of making a new one.

If you want to make an effective story, the best way to keep readers interested is to make your storyline clear and set with one central plot (There can be multiple plotlines in a story, that's ok, but don't overcrowd the story with so many that people lose track of what's going on. Also, if they converge on one another at one or various points in the story is a great way to make the story REALLY interesting Smile ). Add some sensory words or phrases to help paint a picture in the reader's head to help them visualize what's going on and get really engaged in the scene (Example: instead of simply saying "He ran back to his house," try saying "He was sprinting as fast as he could; every step, every breath, every glance could mean life or death." Isn't that better?). Throwing in some dialogue and adding other descriptions about the characters (what their voice sounds like, their posture, facial expression, clothing/apperance, etc.) can really make a difference between a "Yeah, it's clear but kinda so-so" story and a "Wow, I really get it and love it!" story. Oh, and on top of all that, make sure your spelling and grammar are in line! They get very annoying and can cause some confusion when reading just about anything. Before your print or post a story or any other written work, it's best to run it through some document-processing program like Microsoft Word and have it check for spelling errors and grammar/word usage mistakes. But beware, for it may not catch every mistake and you will have to read it to yourself outloud to catch some of the more subtle errors.

More to come next time, stay tuned! Smile
